Back in the water

In the mid-semester break I treated myself to a week's stay in Bali.  Not being in the water, let alone being unable to surf for 2 months, was having disturbing effects on my mind and body.  After arriving in Denpasar I spent 1 night in the over-crowded and self-prostituting Kuta area before heading up the coast to Canggu.  One of my favourite areas of Bali, the region is out of sight from the bustling tourist district and still holds onto a few (quickly shrinking) rice paddy areas.  Best of all there's surf.

Singapore is place where everybody must have everything.  Luxury vehicles, entire malls dedicated to over-priced high fashion, 24hr electronics centres.  I've never seen anything like it.  The saddest part is that despite having all the services and goods in the world available to them, the people of Singers seem unhappy, and constantly complain of their unhappiness.

The other day I was on the MRT and overheard a group of children arguing over who had the best phone.  The 4 kids with iPhone's decided that their friends' Android devices were inferior, and as a result so were they.  These rude little fuckers were about 8 years old.

The shot above shows a group of Balinese boys, roughly the same age of the group mentioned above, laughing and playing on Canggu beach.  Obviously having cool shit does not make you happy, and ignorance is bliss.

Offerings on the beach in the morning.  Note the ciggie.

Some Balinese sculpture.

This is the result of unprecedented population growth on the small island of bali.  The amount of expats building houses and moving their families here had increased dramatically.  But the number of Indonesians from neighbouring islands here to take their own slice of Bali's tourism dollars is uncountable.  Results above.

Had 2 days of great wavs at Uluwatu.  Although it was peak season it was uncrowded (by my standards anyway) and I managed to satisfy my craving for long glassy lefts.  After my land-locked break from surfing getting back on my board was a humbling experience, but it all came back to me soon enough.

Local opinion at Canggu beach.  There is a 5 story resort being built behind this wall.  When I visited the area last year it had not begun construction yet.  When I visit next year I'm sure it will be finished and full of 'surf school _unts'.
